Softball

Winchester Youth Softball will be offering three individual seasons geared towards players' skill level and needs. Our seasons this year will include:

Pre- Season:  One pre-season skills clinic per week held indoors beginning after the new year.  This is a great way to ease into the season as well as let the coaches evaluate players to help pick teams for the spring season.

Spring Season: 8U Spring Season is an In-Town League.  This league will continue to build foundational skills for players, will be coach-pitch, and will be an in-town only league (i.e. no travel).  10U, 12U, and 14U Spring Season participates in the City League made up of neighboring towns. While a travel league, this league is for all skill levels and will conclude with a round-robin tournament for 10U,12U and 14U age brackets. Subject to change, games begin after April vacation and are played Monday-Friday starting around 6pm. You will have two games a week, usually paired with a weekend practice, to help develop the skills required to play softball.

Summer Softball: 8U Summer Softball is an In-Town “Sandlot” league.  Sandlot means no predetermined teams.  Show up, see who else is there that day and determine if there will be a practice or a game.  10-18U Summer softball is a more competitive travel league for the more advanced players as well as players who are looking to continue to play and learn the game. Summer League games (subject to change) are played Monday- Thursday starting around 6:15pm, beginning the 3rd week of June and continuing through early August. This schedule allows the players and their families to enjoy the great summer weather without having to worry about a game on the weekends. Currently, we play in the Middle-Essex summer league that covers the ages brackets of 10U-18U. For the 2023 season, we may also enter a competitive team into the Babe Ruth State, Regional and potentially National Tournament Brackets. This team will be a separate team that plays tournament games over three weeks starting at the end of June. While these are two separate teams, subject to different placement and tryout sessions, players will have the ability to qualify and play for both teams.

Fall Ball: After the completion of our spring and summer seasons, we may have a short in-town only fall league for our 8U and 10U players that will include both instructional coaching from some of Winchester High School's current and former players as well as games. This league is designed to help the girls continue to learn the game of softball in a very laid back environment. For our older players, based on participation, we may enter a local league that plays double-headers one weekend day a week from early September through mid/late October.

Equipment: Winchester Youth Softball will provide uniform jerseys to all participants. Black softball pants and red socks are required to complete the uniform (not provided by WYBS).

Helmets with a cage are required for all batters, and we recommend that each player bring their own helmet.  Softball protective face cages are required for 1B, 3B and pitchers; here too, we recommend that each player bring their own.  Each player should also have their own glove and cleats; bats are recommended but not required as each team will have a limited number of bats for team usage.

6U Softball (Ages: 5-6)

WYBS offers a combined baseball and softball league for the 6U level given the skills learned at this age are the same for both sports. This instructional league is intended to introduce basic skills (throw, hit, catch flies, field grounders, run bases) to small groups of boys and girls 6 years of age (as of April 30th).

Sessions are devoted to instruction through station training, where players rotate through stations designed to provide as many reps as possible. Saturday mornings at Nutile Field.
